This market was a place where they used to import and export war supplies for the US armies right after the Korean War.
Because most of the products were made in cans, the market was named 깡통(can) market. Currently, they do not only sell American groceries but also clothes, accessories, kitchen wares, cosmetics, alcohols and more.

 

6.25 전쟁 직후, 미군의 군용 물자를 수입, 판매하는 장소였는데

이곳의 식품들이 대부분이 통조림이라 ‘깡통시장’이라는 이름이 붙었습니다.

현재는 일제나 미제 식재료는 물론 의류, 액세서리, 주방용품, 화장품, 술 등 다양한 생활용품을 판매하고 있습니다.
